firefox 64 works in safe mode, doesn't in normal: The connection was reset
it was working until a few days ago. no settings were changed. chrome, ie and vivaldi all connect and run normally. runs just fine in safe mode. win 7 64 bit. sp1. current on patches. firefox 47.0.1. windows firewall. panda anti-virus.
i did a refresh. no add ons or extensions. emptied cache. deleted cookies. uninstall and reinstall. reset tcp. no unusual processes or services running. windows firewall set to allow connection.
i'd really appreciate help. i don't like the alternatives...

Hi vin195, The ordinary reinstall rarely fixes anything. You say it works in safemode, I assume that is Firefox's safemode. (As opposed to Windows safe mode). If it works in Firefox's safe mode ot will usually work after a Firefox reset, at least until you start making changes.
Are you saying you have done a refresh and it still works only in Firefox's safe mode ?
If so try with hardware acceleration off. Try upgrading graphic drivers to see if that helps. Conversely also try rolling back graphic drivers.
From your system information you appear to be using Firefox 64bit for Windows. Try installing Firefox 32 bit as an additional browser, does that work ?
The connection was reset error could mean your security softwae is blocking connections and timing out. So see
thanks for the quick response.
sorry for not being more clear. ff runs in win safe mode with networking. it does not work in ff safe mode.
i also have ff 32, and that runs fine. also tried with panda and firewall disabled. and verified firewall allows connections.
most peculiar,
Try to copy the cert8.db file from the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop to the current profile folder.
When you use the refresh feature in Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks and history, form data, tabs) is automatically imported. The current profile folder will be moved to an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop. Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.
It is possible to recover data from the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
- Help -> Troubleshooting Information -> Profile Directory:
Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
thanks for your reply. unfortunately this, too, did not work.
Can you confirm what Safe Mode you are talking about?
Is this about Firefox Safe Mode or Windows Safe Mode?
windows safe mode w/networking
You did copy the cert8.db file with Firefox closed?
If this is about Windows Safe Mode then the most likely cause is your security software (or malware).
You can check the connection settings.
- Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> Network : Connection -> Settings
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.
See "Firefox connection settings":
yes, ff was closed.
tried different connection settings. no luck.
have scanned system with malwarebytes and done a virus scan. nothing there, either. disabled firewall and antivirus. no luck.
it's just odd that ie, chrome and vivaldi work fine. this problem happened after a crash and restart. worked fine until then.
have restored to the earliest point available, and still no luck.
any ideas?
please check in the firefox menu ≡ > options > advanced > network > connection - settings... if firefox is set up to directly connect to the internet ('no proxy'). Firefox can't load websites but other browsers can
otherwise you can also run a scan with various different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes, adwcleaner & eset online one-time scanner in order to be on the safe side...
verified no proxy in use.
ran malwarebytes and adwcleaner, just found a few pups and deleted them just to be safe. eset online can't connect to the internet, neither does firefox.
Are you still having the same problem ?
I know you have done a refresh but maybe something is still corrupt in the profile. Please try a new additional profile to rule that out.
You say https://www.eset.com/online-scanner/ does not connect. Did you try that in Windows safe mode ?
Only working in Windows Safe mode and having a security scanner blocked makes me suspect you still have undetecterd malware.
Does IE or another alternative browser still work ? Are you able to use https://www.eset.com/online-scanner/ by using an alternative browser.
A clan install of Firefox should also be done. That may get rid of corruption in Program Files.I will include the standard instructions, but remember yours will not be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords), since that information is stored in a different location.
To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
- Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
- After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu and click the close button ).
- Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
- Windows:
- C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
- Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
- Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
- Windows:
- Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
- Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
- Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.
Please report back to say if this helped you!
Thank you.
