Firefox hangs after upgrade

Every time I upgrade to a new version of Firefox it will hang. Using OS X El Capitan 10.11.3 After exiting Firefox to complete the upgrade, I will get another active instance (dot under the icons on the dock). Neither one will quit. Neither one will Force Quit. Cannot restart or shut down the Mac without holding the power button. After shut down and restart everything seems to work normally until the next Firefox upgrade. No other issues using Firefox (hanging, slowness, etc) until Firefox upgrades.
