Why Won't The Clear Cache Button Work?

Since the newest update, it is impossible to simply clear the cache, from the browser. When I click on the "Clear Now" button, it only reduces it by 1 or 1 megs at a time! Well, if I have 550 to clear, am I supposed to sit here all day, to do what used to take five seconds?

JScher2000,

Have you seen any major complaints with v45? I had to revert to v44.02 yesterday.

It took me over an hour to get online yesterday. Office Outlook was continuously "not responding." That never happens on OL. My computer was so unstable, I couldn't install Microsoft updates. Since down-dating (opposite of Up) FF and MS Office have been working great.

I would like to continue with you about Skype. Microsoft is one of those companies that, in my opinion, has associations with people I would have to shower after meeting, let alone after reading the story.

Respond to me whenever you are ready to pursue me for those details. I"m out of here tonight though.

Thank you.

I don't know if there is something that any of you Superstars are waiting for me to do. I came on because there were too many messages. Seems you are helping several of us. Any good news - has clear cache been fixed or the problem isolated?

 To all, thank you.

Hi CiaoBella1 You would probably be better starting your own question thread. Once you do that mention it in this thread so that JScher2000 is aware of it.

Downgrading Firefox is usually a bad idea, we normally try everything we can to avoid that. Probably one of the commonest problems with the upgrade to Fx45 is users having incompatible Security related software. The annoying part of that from a Firefox perspective is that often the troublesome security related software is not the core AV product, but some free optional bundled software of shall I say speculative value.

Hi shilow19, could you start a new question for the other issues? Regarding cache not clearing: After clicking the button once, if nothing changes after five seconds, try reloading the page -- for Windows, try Ctrl+Shift+r to force a fresh load. After a reload, does Firefox show that the amount of disk space used by the cache has dropped significantly? I'm trying to figure out whether the problem is (1) the cache not clearing on the first try, or (2) the disk space number not being updated after the cache is cleared successfully.

This worked once or twice, but no, it doesn't clear on the first try, second, third, twelfth, or even sometimes 30th. It reduces in size at whatever pace it wants to, jumping sometimes 2 or 3, sometimes 200... it's buggy.

And I've also been having similar issues as shilow19, flash races up in RAM usage, constant script errors, and it's probably crashed completely on me, at least six times today! This is one of the worst versions of FF I've ever seen, in probably 20 years...

Such as...? What are some of the free, optional bundles software programs that screw with FF functioning well? How are we supposed to know what may be doing it, if we have no idea what to look for? And why would FF 44 work with those same programs of "speculative value", yet 45 won't? This version has been one headache after another...

These problem are on MacOS X? Sounds more like Windows...

Let's start with the crashes. If you are getting the Mozilla Crash Reporter form, your Firefox may have logged some data that would help track down the cause of the problem. You can submit that data to Mozilla and share it with forum volunteers to see whether it points to the solution. Please check the support article "Firefox crashes - asking for support" for steps to get those crash report IDs from the about:crashes page, and then post some of the recent ones here.

John99,

I don't know what the question is, exactly, but I'll deal w/the Skype issue another day

I know downgrading is a bad idea. I work from home - it's critical to have a computer. Usually reinstalling solves issues, one or twice, as a matter of fact. The past three or four versions, I've done that on each upgrade. I thought I mentioned that recently, but I guess not here. I think I uninstalled, reinstalled, then went back to earlier version this time. (I have reinstalled as many as three consecutive tries, so maybe I was too annoyed and figured I'd work first and worry about it later.)

I haven't added anything new as far as AV recently. There is an additional anti-malware, but that's not new either - and you did not say it is an issue. That's it? Guess a third reinstall would be a good idea.

How are we on clear cache? Thank you.

more options

CiaoBella1 You should not need to keep reinstalling. If you do need to something is going wrong. Also an ordinary reinstall often is not a very good solution it often does not actually do much that is useful.

It may help if the problem is that Firefox will not upgrade, but then you will be wanting to figure out what's going wrong with that. Starting your own Question thread about such matters and including your own troubleshooting info may be a good idea.

Good morning,

With the v 45.0.1 update, all seems to be well.

Ciao!

Up to v 45.02. The 'clear now' button is still working terribly. It eventually clears, but I may have to click, reload, click, reload, up to ten tries. I fixed it last time by reverting to an earlier version, which, as you all know, is a bad idea and not fixing it at all. Still, when it goes away, I'm not dealing with it.

I also tried to find this question in the My Questions section, and it is not there. I opened an earlier email that I saved - for a specific reason, not this one. Good thing.

Thank you.

Hi CiaoBella1, what if you reload every 5-10 seconds (Ctrl+Shift+r) without clicking again. Does the number continue to decrease as Firefox works in the background, or does it stop going down after the first reload?

I also tried to find this question in the My Questions section, and it is not there.

Ah, yes, because it's SteveCee's question. If you go to your profile, you could find it under the list of answers you have posted (those include both your questions where you've posted a reply to yourself, and the questions of others where you've replied).

4.20.16 - Why Won't FF 45.x Clear Cache properly? I have been a big fan of Mozilla for many years, and have always 'manually' upgraded, whenever a New Version release had been "field tested" for a while. Therefore, I totally disagree with the moderator who advised against "down-grading" to a Previous Version. I have had to Go Back to previous versions of 20.x, 30.x and one of the most STABLE V's was like 32 or 34.x and 38.0.5. I recently "Upgraded" from 38.x to 45.0.1 then 45.0.2. Usually wait until 4 to 6 versions have been out before I upgrade.

1. I have never had any issues before v45.x with manually Clearing Cache, in one simple Click. 2. Clearing Cache was a daily Routine to run more Nimble, as some sites are simply Cache Hogs, and then everything either Slows Down, or FF started Crashing. 3. Even tried Deleting All Cookies 1st, and Then manually 'Clearing Web cache', and it did work for about 4 times, then, that failed too. 4. IMO - FF 45.x is definitely NOT "stable" yet and it's on-going Problems are increasing, including crashing events. 5. I'm predicting that by v48.x it will be mostly "stable". 6. The other Gorilla is the room is that everything you upgrade, then you have to also have to either: Re-install some "Lost" Add-on's like Adblock Plus, Flash, Silverlight, etc, etc. 7. I have also noticed that there is some Coding Issue between FF and AOL. I have reported this Issue to the aol "genius's", like 7 times, with screenshots; and their Response is ... Yep, you guessed it ... just "Clear your Cache" Mantra.

So far, there hasn't been any real Solutions to the Cache Issue. Hopefully, some Wizard out there will bring us some new info.

Update - There is a FF add-on called Cache Clear, but is rated quite low.

Cheers!

Hi MGM808, if you want to discuss crashes, could you start a new question for that?

Also, it's not normal to lose plugins like Flash and Silverlight during an update. With extensions, if you disabled auto-updates, your extension will get out of date and you will need to update them manually. But if you have having strange add-on removal problems, that's a topic for a different thread.

JScher2000,

I just cleared it without reload, so in order to answer your question, I'll wait until the cache fills. Thank you for pointing out why I couldn't find this post.

MGM808,

So it's still an issue. There was something over at Stack Overflow to disable the cache. The benefit seems to be to retrieve pages in memory "faster" (is this correct?). All cache does is eventually slow things down. Actually, it does more than that, I assume, since the answer to everything always seems to be, as you said, "Clear cache". If that is the case, no matter on which number you set cache, why not just disable then? Thank you for your perspective. Love to have everybody's opinion on this.

Seems that the benefit does not outweigh the negatives, except for purposes of which I am not aware.

Thank you.

CiaoBella1 - thanks for the lead about Stack Overflow, I'll check that out. Meanwhile since we are still on the subject of 'Clearing Cache' on FF 45.x, here are few more things to mention that are directly "related" to cache clearing. 1. I also had success when FF is having a problem with being Slow Populating Pages, by Closing FF, then going to the Library/Preferences Folder; and Deleting the FF 'Preference File'. Then, Re-starting FF with brand new Preferences. 2. My experience with 'Cache' is that its a necessary form of web content memory for sites, and like someone else pointed out it's function is to speed things up; however, some Sites are extremely Cache heavy and is not unusual to go to just One Site and before you know it, you already have piled up over 500 MB's. 3. I do not use the "Override automatic cache management" option. 4. Some HTML5 website's just use a lot of cache. 5. Comparing web browsers - I have Never had a cache problem with Safari, but did with Chrome, although, it was minor and got resolved. 6. Again, I'm predicting that by v48.x it will be mostly "stable".

Thanks

I agree that clearing the cache is a "must-do" in the course of browsing, or else you'll have to reboot the browser, to regain better functionality. I have no idea why something that's always worked fine, only now is buggy, nor why it's not a simple fix for the Mozilla developers. It sure is a pain, having to click and wait, and click and wait, and so on, what used to be done by a single click, well, often it would take two...

MGM808,

You are welcome. As all things seem to eventually clear with FF (I was a very early user), I look forward to coming on after my v 48 update to congratulate you for your experience, wisdom, and foresight.

Ciao!

My theory: I think Firefox 45 is running the cache clearing as a background task and if it doesn't finish quickly, you just see a snapshot of the partial status. It's still going, but the page fails to update progress and there's no indication of what's happening.

It would be nice if there were a spinner or something to let you know that it's still running -- as long as it is still running.

I searched around in the bug tracking system and couldn't find anything specifically about this change, so it might have been a side effect of something else that wasn't picked up during testing. Or possibly I didn't search very well...

I find the time and amount of cache cleared to be quite erratic. Sometimes I click, wait, then click again, & 100 megs have been cleared, then sometimes it'll be only 5 or 10. I try clicking and waiting, or clicking and holding it, and sometimes one works or the other, but it still takes far too long, and too many clicks, and sitting there, coaxing the cache down, doesn't seem like something we should have to endure. It never did that before, so I still don't get why it would. And now I'm on version 46, and it's still doing this, as well as crashing at least once or twice daily. And the flash will still climb higher & higher, so I sometimes manually force quit it, to bring down the memory usage...
