After I've update to the latest version I can't close out of FIrefox. I always have to turn my MAC off and reboot. It has become problematic and I've thought about deleting it. Please help.

Hello,

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords), since that information is stored in a different location.

To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
  1. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Please report back to say if this helped you!

Thank you.

SUBJECT: Firefox keeps "locking up" in OS X 10.11 (El Capitan)

PROBLEM: Firefox App regularly stops responding and “locks up” in OS X 10.11.5 (EL Capitan).

ENVIRONMENT: COMPUTER: MacPro v4,1, RAM 64Gb, OS: OS X 10.11.5 (El Capitan) FIREFOX: v 46.0.1

SITUATION: 1. Firefox App crashes. Firefox icon remains in the Dock. Sometimes Firefox shows a duplicate icon in the Dock. 2. The problem also occurs in Firefox Safe Mode. 3. If I try to reopen Firefox (Applications > Firefox and double click) I get message indicating Firefox can’t be started (its in use). 4. In the dock it shows as "not responding". 5. I cannot delete (Uninstall) the Ap because it is indicated as “In Use”. 6. I cannot not Force quit Firefox. 7. The Activity Monitor shows Firefox App only in the Energy tab (bit not as a duplicate). The App does not show up int the other tabs. 8. Using the Apple main menu (at the apple icon), I cannot: Logout of my account. Restart the computer, Shut Down the computer.

The only way to shutdown Firefox and get out of my account is to power off the computer by pressing the computers power button until the computer shuts down.

ACTIONS TAKEN to REMEDY (but the App “lock up” problem remains): 1. All add-ons (extensions) are completely uninstalled/removed, including McAfee SiteAdvisor (it is actually a plug-in), and the DirectorShockWave plug-in. 2. Clean Install: Firefox v 46.0.1 re-installed 3. The profile was redone using profile manager (added a new profile & deleted default profile). 4. Firefox Refreshed.

FYI in El Capitan, the McAfee SiteAdvisor components are located in Directories (aka Folders) the following locations (paths): El Capitan > Library > Internet Plug-Ins El Capitan > Library > Application Support > McAfee > MSS > Products El Capitan > Library > Application Support > Mozilla > Extensions > (ec80317-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384)

In the latter directory the McAfee SiteAdvisor is the folder: {4ED1F68A-5463-4931-9384-8FFF5ED91D92}

The McAfee SiteAdvisor components are NOT located in the user account Library (i.e., not located in either of the folowing directories):

~/Users > (user ID) > Library > Application Support > Firefox > Profiles > (profile) > Extensions

~/ Users > (user ID) > Library > Mozilla > Extensions

You need to remove all of these components to get McAfee SitAdvisor to not show up under Firefox’s Tools > Extensions

ADDITIONAL NOTES: Had same problem with earlier Firefox versions on El Capitan Have no problems with Firefox on this same MacPro running OS X 10.9.5 (Mavericks), and 10.10.5 (Yosemite). Have no problems with Firefox on a second MacPro (v1,1) running OS X 10.7.5 (Lion). There is no Malware detected on the computer (Verified with several different malware checkers)
