Can pocket be used locally only?
I used to use Pocket back when it was a simple addon. I used it without ever registering, with syncing disabled.
I only do two things with it: (1) add something to my reading list, and (2) view my reading list and select something to read. I don't want syncing, I do want privacy.
Now that it comes with firefox, seems like there's no option to use it without registering. (Sounds like a regression to me). Or is there?

No, the old Pocket add-on was discontinued when the new Pocket feature was added to Firefox. The "choice" to discontinue the add-on was made by Read It Later, Inc, the original developer of the "Read it later" add-on which became the Pocket add-on. Which happened a short bit of time before they "joined up" with Mozilla to jointly provide Pocket as a built in feature. (The name change may have happened about the time that Read It Later, Inc and Mozilla decided to "pair up"; the changes to Firefox may have taken like 18 weeks to get the "new joint effort" ready for release. Like Nightly to Release in 3 - 6 week "channels".)
There's been talk of removing some built-in features and providing those features an an "included add-on", which the user has the option of removing. And iirc, Pocket was mentioned as "being gone" and made (back into) an add-on - but I wouldn't expect it to work as it did before it became a built-in feature. IOW, it may still be "tied" to online storage.
