Hi, the Fairphone 2 is a great project, not only from the hardware point of view as described here https://www.fairphone.com/2015/11/18/guest-blog-ifixit-on-fairphone-2-the-first-truly-smart-smartphone/?utm_source=Fairphone&utm_campaign=cc7b173be9-25_Nov_2015_Late_Nov_Community&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_fc950fe855-cc7b173be9-57926297&mc_cid=cc7b173be9&mc_eid=dce1b63bfa, especially from ethical point of view. The final aim of the project shares many principles with Mozilla. Unfortunately, at the moment the official OS for the Fairphone 2 is Android based and there is also a working progress in order to port Sailfish OS https://fairphone.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/204642759-What-operating-system-OS-will-the-Fairphone-2-run-How-open-is-it-. What about Firefox OS support? In my opinion, this is a crucial to make the Fairphone 2 really fair. Thank you

hi erotavlas, you're right that those two projects would certainly be a good fit - there are some considerations in mozilla towards this direction as well: https://wiki.mozilla.org/FirefoxOS/Fairphone https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox_OS/Phone_guide/Fairphone

I'm also interested in this. Check out https://mobile.twitter.com/fabricedesre/status/669381278819446784 - sounds promising

There's also a session about fairphone and firefoxos listed here: https://mozlando2015.sched.org/overview/type/firefox+os+%2B+mobile+planning

I found this thread in the Fairphone forum https://forum.fairphone.com/t/firefox-os-is-the-way-to-go/3116/24. You can vote on bugzilla for a porting of Firefox OS on Fairphone https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113964225, at the moment we are nearly ten :( In the meantime, you can try the emulator of Firefox OS 2.5 for Android https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/os/2.5/ Finally, I asked directly to Fairphone support and they said to me that are talking with Mozilla in order to port Firefox OS. So great new!!!

As much as I love fairphone's concept, it is very expensive.

You are right, but you have to think about the fairness of the project. There is a detailed cost breakdown here https://www.fairphone.com/2015/09/09/cost-breakdown-of-the-fairphone-2/

There are two reasons for which the cost is high: the first reason is that the limited quantity of production below 50,000 for Fairphone 2 compared to 25,000,000 for a Samsung S4 or similar devices cannot allow to reduce the fixed cost. There is a ratio of 500 so you can imagine a reduction of this order in the fixed cost, if the Fairphone 2 will reach such selling volume. The second reason is that producing fairly costs much because the labour of workers especially children is not exploited, there are not conflict for mining Coltain in Congo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mining_industry_of_the_Democratic_Republic_of_the_Congo and the environment is not polluted. Therefore, we should convince the governments to add a tax on the final cost of the products that do not respect civil rights and the environment.

Those are the final aims of the Fairphone project and for this reason the cost is high compared to the other phone. When you buy a Fairphone, you do not buy only a phone, but you promote a movement and philosophy.

oops, http://recode.net/2015/12/08/mozilla-gives-up-on-firefox-os-for-phones/

No, why? In my opinion this could be the greatest mistake of Mozilla. Mozilla carries on digital right as privacy and user freedom. These values are neglected by other vendors. All is moving toward mobile and users are moving toward chrome since it is synonymous of google and directly related to android. Mozilla should not aspect that users are going to use Firefox on android or ios. So if Mozilla wants really to spread its values has to conquer the mobile world and do not to give up.

Great news :) The official blog of Mozilla https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2015/12/09/firefox-os-pivot-to-connected-devices/ says

We will make space for this exploration by stopping our work to build and ship smartphones through carrier partners.

So the development of Firefox OS for smartphone is not stopped in general, but only via carrier partners.
