When I begin typing a search, I no longer get suggestions from the search engine. (Though I still get suggestions from my search history.)

This is related: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1090728?fpa=1 , but the cookies solution posted there doesn't work for me.

I'm really stumped here. This should be simple.

Things I've tried: - disabling / re-enabling search suggestions in settings - deleting cookings - - switching between different default search engines (google/yahoo/duckduckgo/bing) - checking about:config variables: browser.search.suggest.enabled, browser.urlbar.maxRichResults, browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled - starting firefox in safe mode - deleting my firefox profile and restarting so that a new profile is created - uninstalling firefox with 'apt-get purge' and reinstalling it - different wireless networks

Xubuntu 14.04, Firefox 42.0

(I'm also suffering from another strange issue, and I don't know if it's related. Every once in a while when I hit enter to search, I'm taken to search settings instead of the search executing. This happens maybe once a week.)

I didn't seem to have a search.sqlite file, but I deleted search-metadata.json and search.json.

That did the trick. Thank you, sir or ma'am!

Try the version from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution. You can find the full version of the current Firefox release (42.0) in all languages and all operating systems here:

Try to delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Firefox will rebuild the search.json file from the default built-in search engines that come with Firefox and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.
