trash automatically empties
I was looking at my email and went to my trash folder to reread something I deleted and all my messages automatically deleted. How can I prevent this from happening again?

It depends. What's your account type - POP or IMAP?
IMAP is the account type. Any ideas?
Verify your Thunderbird message retention setting: Account Settings - Synchronization & Storage
Also verify retention settings on the server. Most email providers will not store messages in Trash forever. You'll need to login to your account via webmail for this.
I also have this problem. Also with an IMAP account. When I look a Account Settings - Synchronization & Storage, it is checked to "Don't delete any messages". So I should check next with my email provider (Comcast)?
