In the FxOS settings you can choose the USB mode - MTP or UMS (at least since FxOS 2.0, not sure about previous versions).

I can confirm that. I've used the simulator, however I had success on enabling MTP only on Firefox OS 2.1 and upper.

@buddy5473, this is how it's done:

Open Settings > Click "USB Storage" label > Select Media Transfer Protocol.

In older versions, clicking the label just toggles USB storage, which means that MTP is not supported before FxOS 2.1.
