Firefox still drops the first typed letter. Tried the prior solutions.

Posted

Based on the prior posts this year, I have tried all indicated solutions. I am using window's firewall and resetting it has not helped. When loaded in safe/network mode, the problem does not occur. I am also running webroot.

Are you saying you had no problem with the computer in Safe Mode? Have you tried;

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

The problem still exists when starting Firefox without add-ons. I have gone through the procedures suggested in the Forum that was posted in the Spring of this year including the re-set of the windows firewall. After that possible solution there were no further comments. After going through that process, I still have the problem. Thanks.

What other software is running?

Did you check Anti-Virus software as well?

You can try to disable your security software temporarily to see if it is this software or other software causing this.

I have Disabled Webroot and all other known products of that ilk. This problem appeared suddenly about four Firefox upgrades ago and I also changed anti-virus programs close to that time.

I don't remember the earlier thread. Can you link to it and/or explain where you are typing? Do you mean typing in a form on a web page, typing a URL in the address bar, etc.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1059338 You bring up the Firefox home page and start to type in the search field and the first character does not register.

That's strange. If any characters end up in the field, it seems they all should.

You would have "thunk". It is also independent of the number of tabs open, etc

decrepit said

Do you mean the problem occurs not just at the initial startup and display of your home page but also in other home page scenarios such as:

  • Ctrl+n
  • clicking the Home button on the toolbar

I changed my home page to the built-in home page and I can't replicate the issue.

The Windows Safe Mode with Networking test disables numerous startup programs. It's hard to think of anything that might intercept/discard a keystroke just on one web page, regardless of how it is loaded. You could review your startup programs using this Microsoft utility to see whether it identifies anything suspicious:

I will give this a try and see what happens. Have to go out for the evening. I will continue this in the AM. Thanks everyone, I am sure that it is something very simple and I am totally blind.

This is probably a good site to be aware of http://www.accessfirefox.org/Firefox_Accessibility_Extensions.php It is a semi official mozilla community run site. IIRC the site and many of its addons were caught out by Australis. That is probably one site we should reach out to in advance if for instance making anything less distinct smaller, or lower contrast.

Thanks for the site address. Thought that I had solved part of my problem by going back in time and resetting. That did not work, so went back forward. It seemed to temporarily work. The first Firefox home screen today typed the first letter. Succeeding ones including this site's login screen dropped the first typed letter.
