I rebooted my machine and when I returned to thunderbird all the body content in all my emails had disappeared in the inbox. The from, subject and date were all there but there were no messages. All other folders like junk, sent and drafts were fine. When I received fresh email it was fine too, but all my email history have lost their body copy. I have rebooted several times with no change.

check your anti virus program for what it has done with file inbox. My guess is it deleted it.

Right click the folder, select properties and then the repair button to rebuild the index of what is actually in the file, rather than what used to be in the file.
