i generally have between 2 and 5 tabs pinned and another few just open depending on what i am currently doing. this worked well for me as sometimes if i left my browser open for too long the ram usage warning would flash (my record is over 4.5Gb :d) and advise i close and reopen the browser. that was fine because it would my pinned tabs would always be there no matter what and other tabs that weren't pinned probably were not needed too badly. but when i upgraded to the current version of Firefox and now whenever i close and reopen or turn off my computer all open and pinned tabs disappear and there is no restore session window that pops up. did i mess something up or is this a bug??? please let me know

No, but please make sure that on startup your option still states to start session from last time.

See also other ways to restore your session:

  • Open from History > Restore Previous Session
  • about:sessionrestore in a new url window

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Browsing History
  • Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.
  • Clearing Cookies will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you want to keep.

Does Firefox create a sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder?

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder that stores session data. Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
