Firefox hangs when trying to download any files, access the Options or rearrange TABs. Additionally it seems to freeze at random.

I am running the latest Firefox (40.0.3 on Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.)

I have deleted and recreated the profile many times. 

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox many times. I tried Firefox in Safe-Mode and had the exact problems. I tried the “Reset Firefox” from the Troubleshooting Information option.

I tried disabling my Anti-Virus program.
I tried opening Firefox via “Run as administrator”. 

I disabled all plugins, like flash. I tried many virus scans with programs like Malewarebyte, Ccleaner, Emisoft and Spybot.

However no solution aside from a completely formatting and reinstalling Windows was found.

Is there any other way to fix this problem? My Firefox is basically unusable at this point.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?


Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Then in the reply box at the bottom of this page, do a right click in the box and select Paste. This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.

Starting Firefox in Safe mode has allready been tried. The problem is still there.

Unfortunately the copied text is partially in German. I cannot change this, since I cannot access the options.

Download Firefox Full Version For All languages And Systems {web link} Save the file. Then;

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

• Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory.


Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox folders by adding .old to them.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner. Then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done.

Unfortunately this was not the solution.

I renamed the Mozilla Firefox folder, rebootet, ran a registry scan (with Ccleaner), yet after running the Firefox Full installer the problem still persists.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.


Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that helps.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
