Thunderbird has reached 98% capacity; All Mail contains 47,500 messages. When i delete files (after marking them junk) they reappear- suggestions?

my attempt to permanently delete files from "All Mail" does not remove them - the ribbon at bottom of page says reports that "deleted __ files from All Mail; then it reports that "Dowlonading message..." and most of the deleted files have reappeared

You need to compact your folders to make the old items disappear from the database, otherwise things just jam up and everything stops working smoothly. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird
