My last two versions of FF, 38 and now 40 show two of the red close tab "X's" on the tab bar. I have no idea how the second one got there and can find nothing to get rid of them. Either one will close tabs as normal. Updating to FF 40 did not fix it. Doesn't seem to affect any operation but it's annoying. See attached image.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Try to click the Restore Defaults button in the Customize palette to restore the default toolbar setup to see if that helps.

It turns out that Evidently Firefox went back to having the "X" on the right end of the tab bar by default?

I had the "Tab Close Button Restore" add on and when I disabled it the extra "X" disappeared.

Thanks for at least pointing me in the right direction to fix things.
