about:config changes and Windows 10

Posted

I upgraded to Win 10, and I've noticed that changes I make to about:config don't take effect. I miss Firefox catching my spelling mistakes!

Hi Gabe, where are you noticing spell check problems? If you right-click the form area with the problem, can you turn on Check Spelling or does it seem to be disabled (or missing from the menu)?

What setting are you trying to change? Generally speaking:

There are a few settings that require a Firefox exit/restart to take effect. But usually these involve media or plugins or reverting some UI features to earlier variants.

If Firefox won't let you edit this setting: you may have something called SearchProtect on your system. This needs to be removed from the Windows Control Panel. If the status says "locked" we will need to help you investigate an "autoconfig" file.

If Firefox lets you save your change but ignores it: one of your extensions may be overriding it. I don't know whether any of your extensions are relevant to spell checking... You can review, disable, and/or remove extensions on the add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions.

If the change works during your session, but at the next startup has reverted: you might have a user.js file in your personal Firefox settings folder (your Firefox profile folder). This article describes how to track down and remove the file: How to fix preferences that won't save.

What about:config changes are you talking about?

You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu. At least one dictionary should be installed and have a check mark to indicate that it is selected.

  • Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
  • Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.

You can enable or disable spell checking globally:

  • Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"

You can look here for dictionaries:
