Additional information, about my system.I have had great trouble, for some time, trying to download a current version of Adoby Flash player, and It finely did did so, right after fire fox updated on my computer. I also get error messages when I look at u tube and other videos, and no sound, it tends to frustrate me.

Hi Chris, that would frustrate me, too.

Could you investigate whether any other software installed around the same time as your last Firefox update? This isn't as easy on XP as on newer versions of Windows, but if you go to the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, you could try sorting different ways to see whether you can spot any unknown newcomers.

Can you provide more information on the proxy server message? Does it appear when you start and then not again, or when you request a particular page, or any page? What is the exact wording (so we can search for past threads)?

Thanks.

hi, jscher. my message reads: The Proxy server is refusing connections at fire fox. it is is configured to use a proxy server that's refusing connections. check the proxy settings to make sure they are correct. I have no idea as to how to check the proxy server, nor how to determine if they are correct. as i stated, in my first note, i had gone by the "options" then to advanced, then on to network... etc. route and did every thing as requested, to no avail. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Chris

Do you need the proxy? Have you tried it with No proxy?

In case the update corrupted the program files, could you try this:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(1) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 39.0 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(2) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(3) Rename the program folder, either:

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(4) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any improvement after this reinstall?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

You can check the connection settings.

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":
