Why does firefox generate hundreds of temp files? I'm running Windows 8.1

Firefox is generating hundreds of temp files every time I use it. Even short sessions end up having hundreds of files, up to almost 2000 files. They end up in my temp directory ...

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Set the plugins to "Ask to Activate" on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins" page.
