Everytime I start thunderbird, spamfighter shows up on the toolbar but is shaded out as is block, unblock, move, etc. and this message shows "you are currently not logged in". However gmail is what I use via thunderbird and I still receive new messages.

You are not currently logged into spam fighter is my guess, but one thing is certain your problem is with spam fighter (whatever that is) and not Thunderbird. Please direct your support requests for spam fighter issues to their support forum.
