The button is solid red. Hovering over it doesn't show any info. Clicking on it produces a sound similar to emptying the trash. I tried to add a snap ping image, but the wheel just kept spinning and it never finished.

Uninstalling Firefox doesn't do anything with the Profile folder where extensions and user data is saved. When you reinstall Firefox everything is in there that was there before uninstalling Firefox - it wasn't removed as part of uninstalling Firefox.

Open your add-ons manager and remove that "The Red Button Organization" extension! https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/disable-or-remove-add-ons#w_how-to-remove-extensions-and-themes

Hmm, I don't know. Could you try this: use the Customize feature to drag that button into the box of unused icons and see whether it shows a label identifying itself. This article describes how to use the Customize feature: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

Another thing to check would be your extensions, as most add-on buttons are generated by an extension. You can view those on the Add-ons page using either:

  • Command+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Anything unexpected on the right side? (Firefox includes no extensions when you first install it.)

It won't drag and drop. There is nothing like it in extensions or add-ons. I right-clicked it and it made that sound, then showed a screen shot that will hopefully upload. The upload worked this time...go figure. If you know what it is, could you tell me how to get rid of it

Does "The Red Button Organization" mean anything to you? When I search for that, I find this site which I can't read except using a translator...

They have an extension for Chrome which adds a red button (shows in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfXjILaby_Y) but I don't know why it would appear in Firefox.

How can I get rid of this? Before I came here to ask about it, I had un-installed and re-installed firefox. When I re-installed, it was still there.

Each answer helped some. Being reminded that the profile folder and user data stay when Firefox is uninstalled helped me understand why the uninstall hadn't helped. I removed 3 add-ons. None of the three showed the icon that I was seeing at the top of the browser, but after removing the three, the red button icon was gone. Two of the add-ons were "Download Helper" and an Amazon shopper add-on. Don't remember what the third one was. Thanks to all for the prompt replys!
