Thunderbird freezes up, locks up, or hangs often and seemingly at random
I'm running Thunderbird 31.6.0 on Windows 8.1.
Problem: many "hang-ups" or "Freezing". This happens often. Program is listed as "not responding" in the task manager. If I wait, often as long as 5 minutes, it usually comes back.
It seems to happen at random, sometimes when I click to read an email, sometimes while typing, and other times when i'm not even using the program (I try to switch over to it, and discover it's locked up.)
- I get no error messages
- This seems to happen at random
- My internet connection is fine, and is still operational while Tbird is frozen up
- My email accounts come from my own server. I have 4-5 accounts and run them as imap, with SSL
- I have a few add-ons, should be listed below
- I have no third-party firewall or virus program, only what comes with Windows 8.1.
- Checking and sending email works fine (everything works fine) except when the program is locked up

What is your anti-virus software?
Windows defender (or whatever now comes with windows 8)
Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.
- Win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode
- Win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode
- XP http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx
Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode.

Does the problem go away?

This appears to have been the problem - Thank you so much. I'll monitor it over the next day and make sure.
I've had the same issue with Thunderbird hanging constantly after Windows 10 upgrade. After a lot of troubleshooting, here is a solution that seems to have worked for me.
When Windows upgraded to version 10, the Windows Firewall was installed and activated automatically. Reviews said it was good, so I allowed it to run. As a troubleshooting step, I disabled Windows Firewall and installed Avast (free version). Since this step, I've had NO hangs in Thunderbird!
I'll add that I first downloaded beta version 40 of Thunderbird and had all kinds of problems, including graphics issues, hanging, total crashing, etc. I uninstalled v40 and clean installed v38.2.0.
My setup: - Thunderbird v38.2.0 - Use hardware acceleration (unchecked) - Allow Windows Search to search messages (unchecked) - Windows 10, Intel i7, 16GB RAM, dual monitors
