How to make enhanced view default on new tab page?

Posted

Can you tell me how I make the "enhanced view" the default setting of the new tab page? Right now, I have to select it every time I turn on my computer and start the browser. It would be great to set it and forget it. Thanks -JC

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your feedback. Until then, how do I make "enhanced" the default and keep the setting between computer sessions?

Type about:config in the address bar and click 'Enter'.

Search for "browser.newtabpage.enhanced" and then right click > Toggle (to set it to "True". I believe that should do it.

By the way, the next version of Firefox is less than two weeks away.

I still see all three choices if I click the gear icon on the about:newtab page in the current Nightly (40a1). Only the label names have changed, so I don't think that they will be removed. The current Beta also still has three choices.

  • Show suggested and your top sites
  • Show your top sites

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

Thanks for putting that out there. My setting is already on "true" so that must not set the feature as a default but rather indicating its current state. Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks...

Do you see the tiles on the about:newtab page?

You can check the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page and set that pref to your preferred new tab page.

  • the default new tab page with the tiles is about:newtab
  • the default home page is about:home
  • for a blank page you can use about:blank

The browser.newtabpage.enabled pref should be set to true to use the page set via browser.newtab.url as the new tab page.

The directory tiles that Firefox shows on the about:newtab page are saved in the directoryLinks.json file in the parent location of the disk cache. You can check if you have this file. See the about:cache page for the location of the disk cache and go one level up.

You can check the browser.newtabpage.directory.source pref on the about:config page.

  • browser.newtabpage.directory.*

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
