Sorry that this is "old hat". When trying to login for support, I discovered that my user name had one character that was different from my email address; most likely I had entered it with a typo. However, the email address for the account was correct, as I got email notifications - but I was not able to Change the user id. I finally discovered that by pursuing a question And Then clicking the This didn't help button, that I was allowed to create an account. So, there are really big improvements that would make the whole process much more transparent - for starters, the signin page should have the (very commonly implemented) option for verifying whether a user name is valid!
