It's not only the US, it's also not present in many European countries. However, in the age of online shopping, you don't need it to be present in your country per se. Just visit one of the major online stores, and pick out a model you like. A very comprehensive list is here. I'll get mine from Germany :)

Anyway, probably as Firefox OS expands to more carriers, it'll be more and more available through mobile carriers around the world.

I agree with the OP - an annoying situation.

It is challenging to get an international phone and use it in USA. One would have to make sure everything work. I am not aware of any blog/wiki/manual to getting this to work. I, myself, wouldn't try without some instruction since I am not a geek (especially in cellphone). If someone writes something or know of one, I'd love to see it.

The company Geeksphone has been selling unlocked phones for FirefoxOS developers for a couple years. The "Revolution" model from early 2014 can be ordered through Amazon or their website.
