Happens at least once a day now. Firefox will be working fine then when I try to go to another webpage will just spin. After xing out it will not restart unless I reboot computer. Even trying to close with Task Manager is ineffective. Tried refreshing but same problem.

Here are the top five reports. The problem is worsening. Now, even when I restart the computer I still get the message that firefox is running. I had to uninstall and reinstall to get back on Firefox. Greatly appreciate your help!

The crash report flagged these programs;

Signature shutdownhang

nvwgf2um.dll = NVIDIA Compatible D3D10 Driver

Get updates for your NVIDIA software

The Signature: shutdownhang is something that just came up on some systems. The powers that be are working on it.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

The crash signature is "shutdownhang". From your perspective, is there a crash that is causing Firefox to try to shutdown, or are you exiting out of Firefox manually when this happens?

After re-reading your original post, it sounds like Firefox is frozen waiting for the network. Trying to exit Firefox 36+ in this state seems to make firefox.exe "unkillable." There are a few other threads on this -- none has led to a satisfactory explanation:

In the first (older) thread, the problem did not occur in a new Firefox profile, suggesting that something in the settings folder (a preference, a corrupted or locked settings file, an extension, something else..) could be the culprit.

Here is how to test for that:

Create a new Firefox profile

This is in addition to and does not replace your existing settings.

A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should come with completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.

Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run) -- type or paste the following and press Enter:

firefox.exe -P

Don't delete anything here.

Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.

Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like March24, and ignore the option to change the folder location. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.

It might take a while to determine whether the new profile is works better than your old one. If you want to import your bookmarks from your regular profile during that time, here's how:

You can use the Library dialog (Ctrl+Shift+b or "Show All Bookmarks") to access the Restore feature. The trick is knowing where to find your bookmark backups in your regular profile. After clicking Choose File... you can paste this into the file name space and press Enter to drill down to your profile folders:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

The semi-randomly-named folder that has your last backup is usually the one ending with "default". Click into that one, then into the bookmarkbackups folder. Here you can pick the most recently updated file to restore.

Important: a Restore wipes any bookmarks currently in your active Firefox profile and replaces it with the contents of the restored backup.

Sadly, going to have to give up on Firefox after using it for many many years. I cannot get this issue resolved. I deeply appreciate the assistance the Mozilla community has tried to give. However, it now has gotten to the point where Firefox only works if I uninstall reinstall and restart the computer and then Firefox only stays running for an indeterminate amount of time before hanging up. If this issue ever gets resolved or a new version of firefox is developed someone please let me know. Until then, I must sign off of Firefox and use a different browser for my sanity's sake. Thanks to all who tried.

Firefox 37 was released today, but I haven't heard whether it has any affect on this issue.
