why does latest version of Adobe flash player starts multiple copies
When I go to a page that uses adobe flash player Firefox freezes. When I open up task manager there are up to 10 copies of flash player running and I have to close them manually. What is going on?

Are there more than one place on the webpages that are viewed have more than on call to the plugin?
"Flash 11.3 and higher use a "protected mode" which can spawn multiple processes for better isolation" If there are any issues, this is not out of the ordinary.
I do not know if there is more than one call on the program but I never had this problem until version 16.
FlashPlayer often causes problems.
The protected mode is intended to improve security, but itself may cause problems. It certainly has been shown conclusivly to increase the rate of Firefox crashes. Firefox now makes it easier to disable Flash Player's protected mode when necessary or for test and compsarison purposes.

Note some sites offer HTML5 video instead of or as an alternative to FlashPlayer. YouTube is an example, but even with YouTube options have been chabging and changing back and sometimes may differ and be not only browser specific but browser version specific. Look at their test and options page with each browser:
