I have a problem with my tabs

Posted

I have a lot of tabs open. They are at least 300, but I'm not certain, they could be a lot more than that. Because sometimes in the past I have lost my open tabs due to computer crashes etc and it took me awfully long searching history and reopening them, for about a year now I have been copying from mozilla's default folder all files with sessionstore and places in their names to another folders and flash drives. Some months ago (I think after an update) Inoticed that there was no sessionstore.js in mozilla's folder anymore and that there was a new folder named sessionstore-backups. I kept on copying ths sessionstore.bak files and this folder. In the last few weeks every time I start mozilla instead of throwing me in the tab I was on the last time I was using it, mozilla shows me the home page as the first tab, everything is stuck(I can't click anything with the mouse) and all my tabs are being shown as "new tab". After about a minute a message pops up, saying that a script of action has stopped working (or something like that, my windows are not in English and I don't know how to translate it exactly) . This window gives me three options: continue, troubleshoot or pause script. I press continue and after a few seconds the tab I was on with the home page disappears, the selected tab becomes the one I was using the last time I used mozilla and all my tabs appear with their correct names (and not marked as "new tab"), everything stops being stuck and mozilla functions properly from there on. today someone else used my computer and started mozilla. I don't know what he did exactly but when I later started the pc an mozilla everything started like I described before, but this time the "a script of action etc." window was having a different error. I pressed again continue but then everything stop being stuck but remained as was, the selected tab being the home page and all of my tabs marked as "new tab". When I tried to open one of the tabs all I got was a blank page. My first impulsive reaction was to close mozilla and restart it, but the same thing happened. I then opened mozilla's folder (from about:support) and saw that there was a sessionstore.js file in there small in size, so I suspect that what I have now is a sessionstore.js file with about 300-400 of "new tab" tabs stored in it. Two days ago I copied from mozilla's folder (in case something like this happened) the following folders and files: [folders]: bookmarkbackups, crashes, datareporting, extensions, gmp, gmp-gmpopenh264, sessionstore-backups, storage and [files]: places.sqlite, places.sqlite-shm, places.sqlite-wal, prefs, sessionCheckpoints.json, sessionstore.bak, sessionstore.bak-20140923175406. Please tell me I can restore my tabs with those somehow, I don't want to be searching for them through one and a half year of history... Thank you in advance. I have windows 8.1 and mozilla 35.0

I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift (Mac Options) > key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

I started firefox as you said. Again it stuck then gave me the "a script has stopped working window" saying: resource://app/modules/WindowsPreviewPerTab.jsm:518. I pressed continue and after a while firefox started working, but again all of the tabs were marked as "new tab" and when I opened one I got a blank page

Couldn't find anything helpful there unfortunately. Do you know if I can copy any of the files I listed in the question (the files I saved from three days ago) to return firefox to the condition it was three days ago?

Wait for an expert to guide you. Save the files to a safe place but outside of Firefox..

Well, it seems waiting is not my strong suit..! I renamed a javascript file called recovery to sessionstore. This file was in the folder sessionstore-backups I had copied from mozilla 3 days ago, when my tabs were still in place. I replaced the sessionstore in mozilla's default folder with the renamed file and then started mozilla. And the tabs reappeared as they were 3 days ago! So there goes the tab problem. But again when I started mozilla the window saying "a script has stopped responding" appeared, this time the script being: chrome//browser/contenttabbrowser.xml2542

If someone knows how to fix this and make firefox launch normally, please reply! Thank you

You can try to disable preview per tab on the Windows Task Bar.

  • about:config page: browser.taskbar.previews.enable = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. It was already disabled.

Sorry, I got the script wrong yesterday. As I saw today, the script that stops responding is: chrome://global/contents/bindings/browser.xml:244
