In your past experiences with support when loosing data after an update, were there any add ons or sync services that also managed your passwords? Are there any config entries that you have changed from the default. In order to investigate a cause the troubleshooting information is helpful from about:support. I believe in WIndows 7 there is also a feature to right click on the profile folder and to "Restore to a previous version" to get these back.

FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your
Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more.
In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild
your saved files individually into installable .xpi files.
It will also make backup of files that you choose.
