The directions for changing my default search engine don't work.

I dislike being tracked and bubbled, and so I use DuckDuckGo.com instead of Google. I was able to make DDG into my homepage, but I cannot make it my default search engine. That's because Google is the default, and when I look at my history, DDG never shows up. It never shows up in the pinned pages, either.

I would call that restraint of trade, but I'll settle for knowing how to fix it. How do I fix it? It's tedious having to type it in every time.
