Entries folder, inside cache2 is saving 17000 files in 2 to 3 days and causeing crashes

I noticed Firefox gets slower loading certain pages like FB and Yahoo, then finally crashes. I tried to find out what was wrong and cleared caches which vastly improved the situation. Then I decided to watch where the biggest problem appeared to be.

Inside the Cache2 folder is an entries folder. When I open a page in Firefox it can add 25 to 30 or so entries. In less than 3 days I had 17000 files.

I have no idea how to sort this problem or why it is happening.

The files dont have names just a series of random number and letter

If the cache seems to be slowing Firefox, it might be too large. You can set a different size in the Options dialog so it doesn't grow so big.

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab

To set a custom size, check the box for "Override automatic cache management" and set the desired number of megabytes. Normally, it's about 350, so you could try 200 and see what difference that makes.

Its not that the cache being too big its that for every page in FF I open the cache adds about 20 - 50 files to the entries folder. This grows to about 1000 in only a few pages and clogs up FF and crashes it.

I checked my FF information page and it says there is a user.js file in the profile folder that isnt a FF file, but even though I have made all files visible, I cannot see it. It looks like I may have a bug unless someone can tell me that its normal for the entries folder to keep growing in file numbers like this. This seems odd because even when I dont open any pages but just have FF open and write on this page I am watching the entries folder add another few files.

I believe that my profile may be corrupt but I am not confident enough to replace it for fear of loosing so much data. Be great to have some help through the process and or confirmation that I am doing the right thing and assurances I can recover bookmarks etc

PS I am using your advice and have reduced the cache to see if this helps, thank you

Modern web pages have dozens of elements, so I'm not surprised that a lot of items would be stored in the cache.

When checking for user.js, make sure to look in your main profile folder and not the companion temporary folder (where you found cache2). You can open your current Firefox profile folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button to launch it in a new window.

If you are viewing files alphabetically in the Details view and you find a file named user that is of the type JavaScript or JScript, then that probably is user.js. You can adjust a Windows setting to show the file extensions that Windows normally hides from you. This article has the steps: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions
