Pages won't load from dropdown list of recent visits

I updated to 33.1 last night. Since then, in a new tab, pages will not load from the dropdown list I get of my frequently visited ones by typing in the first couple of letters. It doesn't even work by letting the address complete itself in the address bar and then clicking go; I have to copy the address, paste it into a new tab and THEN it loads. This is seriously annoying - anyone else ? (I tried safe mode. Same thing.)

I can circumvent this by going to my HOME page - THEN, for some reason, it works, but not in "new tab". And I cannot persuade new tabs to open in my home page... Only in "classic"or Enhanced - and I don't WANT that stuff; I'd happily accept new tabs opening to my home page but NOT all that junk. (And I just noticed the closest button below this post being an addon - it shouldn't be; immediately below a post should be "post question"....)

I am about to be away for a few days, but if anyone knows how to set new tabs to open with my home page...

Never mind. I found an add-on. But I shouldn't have to use an add-on for something so basic as customising a new tab :(
