Since version 33, on restart FF hangs, Netflix container suspected?

Posted

Problem: This does not appear to be the graphics known issue of blank screens. Upon restarting FF, it comes up with a solid gray window content, nothing to click on. Viewing with Process Explorer I see one container running. Upon clicking X to exit program, FF appears to close but is still running. Upon killing process with Process Explorer, I am notified that a sub-process must die. Fine. Let it all stop, restart FF, same thing.

Workaround: With all FF processes stopped, rename the profile default directory, start FF, let it fail for lack of a profile, rename profile back to original name, start FF, and it runs again with all info (open windows, etc.) intact.

Any suggestions for an actual fix that does not require setting up FF again from scratch?

You can check if you can start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift/Options key.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

I forgot to mention that hardware acceleration is turned off, and when the problem exhibits, FF will not start in safe mode either.

Is there no "logging" mode in FF, to help pin down what is causing the problem?

Operating version 33.0.02 now, so far no instance of the problem, keeping my fingers crossed.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
