I followed directions for speeding up firefix and went through upgrade. Now my desktop items are missing as are the contents of "My Documents"

I updated firefox now, a day or two later, "My Documents" folder is empty, most of my desktop items are gone, including the firefox restore/backup symbol that was placed there during the upgrade.
