All Sent email missing after upgrade - Thunderbird had never posted to ISP so they can't restore. Can I get them back?

It seems thunderbird was not posting my sent messages back to my ISP email sent folder. Then yesterday all my sent mail was gone (turns out there was a Thunderbird update released two days ago). I logged on to my web mail and that folder was empty. I asked my web host to restore from backup and they let me know there is no history of any sent mail so nothing to back up. Before upgrade, does the upgrade make a backup?Are these messages stored somewhere locally where I can recover them?
