Hi, win8, heaps of memory, TB 24.6.0, various add-ons

The copy and paste just stops functioning sometime - when I select ctrl+c then ctrl+v nothing happens.

Also, ctrl+ left /right arrows will move by word, but up/down arrows do nothing.

Both the copy paste and the para up/down have never had a problem in any other programme.

(Now I just tried pasting into notepad and it worked! Then it pasted within the compose window too... I had copied something else in the meantime, don't know what fixed it.)

This is very annoying. Is there a quick fix? No I don't want to spend 3 weeks mucking around with add-ons, creating new profiles or starting in safe mode - surely only 1 person needs to do that then tell the community the answer??? (or better still fix the issue!)

Sure, but as I have never seen anyone else complaining about just that. Your it.

However take note of what your pasting and from where. Often these sorts of issues are actually to do with the type of information the program doing the copy places on the clipboard Vs what he program pasting wants.

Instead of Ctrl +V try Ctrl + Shift +V (paste without formatting which is plain text really.)

It is many years since I worked with this stuff, but word used to typically place copies text on the clipboard as TXT, RTF, BIFF, BMP and a fully fledged OLE object. Gives the pasting application choice. Although HTML was always missing.

Perhaps you missed that I said it was WITHIN the compose window, like you missed the others with this problem. Perhaps they have just put up with it and worked around, like I have for a very long time.

If you don't know the answer I am not sure why you are posting.

Thanks for the insult though.

The work around is you have to rewrite the whole text.

Insult what was the insult.... really speak up. And before you get to smart about it

Was it is telling you your it. Well sorry to break it to you but I don't see anyone else with the problem so they can go through the diagnostic process on your behalf. So no one has an answer, and neither do you. So your still it.

Why am I posting if I don't know the answer? That is simple really. We volunteer our time to try and help our fellow Thunderbird users. When new problems do arise we try and get to the bottom of them and get them fixed. Your problem is one such. You have now made it abundantly clear to me you do not want support as it is offered for Thunderbird so I will go away. I suggest you continue to use your workaround.

Hi, win8, heaps of memory, TB 24.6.0, various add-ons

Then update to the current version. 24 is no longer supported. Even if it has a bug, no one is going to fix it. Restart with add-ons disabled and see if it helps. (Add-ons are supported by their author. If they mess with Thunderbird that is a problem for the add-on author not anyone here.)

If that does not cover it perhaps you need to file a bug in bugzilla. But be warned. Developers are not interested in anything that does not move a bug forward. They will make you go through the diagnostic process before they will even accept that there is a bug. They will ask you for steps to reproduce the problem. They often close bugs "works for me" if they are unable to replicate the behavior and there is a single reporter,

Thanks for the advice. I'm on auto updating, I see it's up to 31 now. I suppose in the absence of any advice I shall have to wait and see if this bug has been resolved.

If not, I will wait to see if anyone posts who has actually come across this and figured it out. I am quite sure, despite your assurances to the contrary, that this problem has not singled me out alone out of all TB users.

I would expect that if an add-on caused this that the author would be well aware of that and either advise or fix, rather than me going through every single add-on to try to find an intermittent fault. That is what these forums are for.

FYI, I have posted answers in various places - if I have resolved the problem for myself. If I haven't, I don't waste the poor punters' time - they've probably spent more than enough already trying to figure it, as I certainly do, before asking for help.

This sort of dialog from people who don't have an answer is completely unhelpful and clogs help forums so that people like me who are looking for an answer have to plough through screeds of rubbish before either giving up exhausted or finding an actual answer buried somewhere on page 7 of the 35th site visited.

If all else fails I will file with bugzilla.

Have a great day.
