restoring or trasnsfering calander files
Why is it that what should be the simplest task in the world is a Rube Goldberg nightmare? We have a number of Thunderbird Calendars in different colors (red for appointments, blue for special occasions etc).
First: one of the calendars seems to be corrupted and we want to restore it from the Windows 7 back up. Simple? Impossible. We can not find them. You can not restore what you can not find.
Second: our office has a new computer and we SIMPLY want to copy those calendars over to the new unit where we have installed Thunderbird. Simple? Impossible. Same problem: if you can not find them you can't copy them over.
All responses to these issues have been wrong and been given by people who have obviously not ACTUALLY DONE IT. People should not tell us to do what they have not actually done themselves for the documentation simply wrong in many regards. So please do not tell us to do what you have not ACTUALLY DONE to confirm the instructions are correct. Simple: Verify in fact. Vet the instructions in real life where we actually live. Don't tell us what *should* be true but show us what is proven to actually *be* true. All else is a waste of all our time. Don't tell -- show.
We are told the calendars are in the Profile. We find the Profile (we are showing hidden files and folders) but we can find nothing that even suggests calendar files and nothing that even suggests files with the properties of the calendars on our computer. Not a hint. not a clue. We can not even discover the path-name. We have supplied screen shots of all this. When instructions are proven to be wrong the solution is not to just ignore the fact. This should be the simplest task imaginable and not the embarking on a new career.
We have Windows 7 and the most recent version of FireFox. If a calender is corrupted how do we restore of from a back up? If we buy a new computer and install Thunderbird and want to copy the calendar over how do we do that? We can do none of this and we can not even find the calendars. When someone actually does this do let us know. Does anything really need to be this complicated?

Thanks. Simple enough. Not even close to the many other responses. Simple, clear and direct. This might help but please notice no one ever told me there to find them or even that I was looking for iCalander file types. In out profile is not at all helpful. Nice. Communication skills? “Here's a haystack full of irrelevant needles” is not helpful – it's harassive.
But it's never wise to test the water with both feet. If calendars A, B, and C are not broken I do not want to fix them.
See & compare screen shots. The Calender-data directory has back ups. Are these what I create when I do regular exports?
In any event I've heard of Rube Goldberg on Steroids but this is Rube Goldberg on crack. Common sense? Forgetaboutit. Gee it would be nice of the properties in one screen shot even resembled the properties and pathname in the 2nd screen-shoot. Can I just replace one iCal file? But which is which? How can I know. WHO writes this stuff? WHERE do they find these people? Which one is the broken one? Which one is aptsonly? When I name ANY file that is the name the software assigns. If I name a document test.doc my software does not save is as @#@@!#$@%. Utterly insane.
My suspicion is that all local calendars are stored in the one database file. No new files appeared when I added a second test local calendar. So you don't have an option to repair any one calendar independently.
For my own interest, I intend to find a sqlite database tool and attempt to understand better what the files do.
FWIW, I'd put £10 on your apts calendar being stored in your local.sqlite file. Backup files are probably created automatically so a transaction can be rolled back when something untoward happens. This is all "under the hood" stuff that ordinarily we don't need to be aware of, let alone understand.
You can spend years at university learning about databases, transaction processing, critical sections, semaphores and atomic operations. It's not trivial.
Yes, I have found the profile, I've found the calendar-data folder (and no thanks to any input I've gotten here btw! but by entirely different means), so all that remains is to copy it for backup purposes. “IT”? What “it”? I have five different calendars! One is corrupted — not all of them. Likewise I want to copy ONE (special occasions or appointments only) to another computer. Not all of them. This is *intuitively* THE most rudimentary thing I can think any end user would want to do simply and easily.
See attached. What back up process created these iCal files? Not me. I export to a different directory. Are those not back ups I can use? What are they?
I just created a new calendar called 'Test to Delete'. I have exported it to my document directory for calender back ups but it does not appear in the Thunderbird/Calander-data back up directory – do not even ask me how the various “back ups” there were created for I don't have a clue. So, I have a Calendar-data directory that list no calendars. Nice! That directory has Sqlite which is an incomprehensible rabbit hole to a new career and it can not be opened. There are NO separate calendars as I have created them. That Calendar-data directory also has a 'backup' sub directory. I have no idea who, what, created those backups with the same date but they do not appear to be separate calendars. Waht on earth are they? Who can possible know?
So I am totally miffed and befuddled and this is NO way to spend a life. ALL I want to do is find and move one calendar not venture a new career! But why be so outrageous as to expect reasonableness? This is all absurd. Simplify! Simplify, Simplify. Rube Goldberg needs to enter digital detox.
WHY do you keep referring to sqlite when you just said it's not relevant? The only article I am talking about is the only one you sent. Id does not tell me how to restore my calendars -- not even a hint of a suggestion.
If you have not encountered this problem before I suspect that this simple task is so frustratingly impossible (and the feed back so incomprehensible) that people just dump Thunderbird and move on --- like to Walgreen's for a simple day planner.

We just want to know what time it is. We do not want to make a clock! We just want to do what any *normal* person would want to do. Restore a calendar – not five of them! Great a new Calendar for say, special occasions, and share THAT calendar with another person or move it to another computer. If the tech mad hatter designers at Mozilla don't understand this then they live down their own rabbit hole and are out of touch with the real world we live in. When the simplest task imaginable becomes this preposterous back and forth it's the biggest consumer turn-off in the world.
I give up. Three days and how many hours? To find and restore a calendar. Please show me where you or anyone has has shown me that the profile is contained in appdata/roaming/Thunderbird/profile. Simple enough? Despite numerous haystacks full of irrelevant needles no one here showed me that.
Everyone said replace the entire Profile IF (Catch 22) you can find it. Now I learn that is not true. Now I learn only the Cal-data directory can be replaced ---- but I dare not even try it.
Now I learn, contrary to common sense, that I don't even have separate calenders at all and that, perhaps, just perhaps, the might be found in a place called SQlite, maybe, and which that I can not access unless I get a university degree in database engineering.
When I drive a car I don't care what's under the hood. I only care that I can get where I need to go without two days of detours or doing a major overhaul and when I buy a new car I just take the stuff out of the trunk and clove compartment and move it over and go.
I am so done with Mozilla. The most terrifying thought is that we end users will spend years putting stuff in our calendars but if we buy a new computer good luck. That, of course, is where the real expense is and it's not the price of the computer but the price of lost time in endless tinkering that is far too high. No one makes consumers more reactionary and unwilling to upgrade than software designers.
And btw: What an admission! With years of experience and expertise the best you have is a mere 'suspicion' that all separate calendars (intuitive?) are not separate but contained in an incomprehensible database even you don't understand. Just amazing. Rube Goldberg nerds with brains the size of box cars create puzzles even experts can't comprehend and what should be the most intuitively simple task in the world is a nightmare. The simplest question imaginable consumes days and hours of several people lives only to come up with the suspicion it can't be done.

Rather than grubbing about looking in the profile (when you've managed to find it) you'd do better to look through your menus. The functionality you seek is all there.
- Open Lightning.
- Select the calendar of interest.
- On the menu, Events and Tasks, then Export
- Save your calendar as an .ics file
- Put this .ics file on a thumbdrive or equivalent.
You can take this .ics file to another of your computers and:
- Insert the thumbdrive
- Open Lightning
- Check if the calendar you wish to insert already exists. If not, use File|New|Calendar to create it.
- On the menu, Events and Tasks, then Import
- Select the .ics file from your thumbdrive
- Select which existing calendar you want to insert the data into. In contrast with other areas of Thunderbird, such as the address book and message stores, you can merge calendar data rather than just overwriting pre-existing data.
Backing up your entire profile periodically still remains the best way to ensure you can recover from a major hardware failure. Obviously you can maintain a set of individual calendar .ics files. But most people wanting to share calendars do so via the cloud. If you prefer to fiddle about with multiple individual files, that's your choice to make.
And please, show us a link to some help or advice that you think was wrong or at least unhelpful when seeking your profile. Given that there is a button in Troubleshooting Information that takes you there, I can't see any way to make it easier. Or maybe you've forgotten to tell us you're using a very old version of Thunderbird which doesn't have this feature?
Greetings: One more question. Isn't there a distinction with a difference between Copy' and 'Import'"?
It appears that a my system files have become corrupted and I'll have to do a restore from disc image (restore points sill not work) so I may have to reinstall Thunderbird entirely and then replace the profile and calendar .ics files which have been backed up. But I am still confused about terminology. Backing up your entire Thunderbird profile folder means that not just your calendar, but all your other Thunderbird-related data can be restored, including your somewhat unusual requirement to work just on calendar data.
But the .ics back ups are not created by merely 'copying' them to a back up folder via the Export/Import function.So do I simply copy the back up back into the right TBird directory of do I use the Import option. Isn't there a distinction with a difference between 'Copy 'and "Import"?
Finally this reply word processing program is weird. When I highlight a word and click Bold it does not make the text bold but just adds an other set of quotation marks.,
