I set my page simply for google search engine, and now firefox comes up with the screen:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/31.0/whatsnew/?oldversion=30.0

which is an ad for firefox. I would understand if firefox had this in conjunction with the google search open at the same time, but if I have to load up google search then it is the same thing as some other ad hijacking my homepage.

hello, does this happen on every start? could you go to the

  • firefox menu New Fx Menu > help Help-29 > troubleshooting information,

copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum? this might give us a clue what is going on...

You can check the home page setting:

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
