After a system failure all of my bookmarks on firefox disappeared, are they saved in a folder on my computer and how do i recover them?
The system is running on Windows 7, after the restore, all bookmarks and all history prior to the restore were missing
Chosen solution
What kind of restore was it -- a rollback to an earlier point in time (earlier restore point) or a full refresh of Windows?
When you refresh Windows, often a new folder is created named:
C:\Windows.old\
If you find that folder, there's a good chance it contains all your old Firefox data. Could you check for that?
Because the contents of important folders often are hidden to prevent you from accidentally damaging Windows, you may need to make those folders visible. This article has the steps: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hidden-files
If you can find old Firefox folders, then I'm happy to describe the recovery options in more detail.

Open a new tab or window. type about:support in the address box and press enter. Or Press the <Alt> or <F10> key to bring up the tool bar. Then Help > Troubleshooting Information.
Under the page logo on the left side you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To it’s right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Enter the bookmarkbackups folder. This is where Firefox makes backups of your bookmarks. Look for the file you want to restore (check the time / date). Right click on that file and select Copy. Now go back to the parent folder where you started. Right click in the folder and select Paste. Close FireFox. Rename the file bookmarks.html by adding .old to it. The file you just pasted here, rename it to bookmarks.html. After you are done, restart Firefox.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Received suggestion from Cor-el, directing me to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox
Then, going to bookmarks, clicking on unsorted bookmarks opened the bookmark library
Also, to find the backup copy, in windows did a search for .json to get the path
hope this helps all
