On my Windows lappy, my inbox deletes messages upon exit instead of retianing them

I can retrieve messages properly. If I leave Thunderbird and exit out when I come back to it the current messages are gone!

If I shut down my laptop with messages present in Thunderbird, when I start it up again they are are gone.

What setting am I missing that will enable me to retain them?

I'm transitioning from Windows XP to Windows 7.
