Hi! Since the update to 30.0 I have NO navigation buttons; NO search area, (for the website's address); NONE of my addons function & I'm still trying to deal with issues that the last update to 29.0.1 messed-up! I can't even see what was on the previous web page because I don't have any "arrow" buttons! I started using Firefox exclusively about 6 years ago because it was more secure & I could "make it my own" by arranging everything the way I wanted it, but something's wrong here, because since v. 29.0 Firefox has been one annoying problem after another. In 29.0 & 29.0.1, even right-clicking & selecting "customize" didn't work---it just opened a blank page that said "about: customize", & that's it---no info or instructions---just a blank page!! Sorry if I sound 'testy', but "Updates" are supposed to improve things, or add new features to an already existing product or service; these last 3 updates have me totally frustrated, because they didn't improve anything & instead of adding features it wiped away everything that was there!!! I apologize for being a bit 'ranty', but I'm out of patience with Firefox. PLEASE---if someone has a solution, post it quickly before I decide to switch browsers. Thank you for reading my post---again, sorry for my demeanor, but I get upset when I can't even click an arrow button to see what was on a previous web page---grrr With frustration, Nuts4Mutts :(

Still no main toolbar? To rule out extensions as a possible culprit, you could try the site in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Plugins like Flash still run.

After Firefox closes, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

Any difference?

If your toolbars are more broken after renaming localstore.rdf than before, you can reinstate the earlier file. With Firefox closed, rename the "new" localstore.rdf to localstore.bad. Then rename localstore.old back to localstore.rdf. When you start Firefox again, it should use that file.

It sounds as though Firefox launched in full screen view. To exit full screen view, try one of these:

  • F11 key
  • slide the mouse to the top of the screen and right-click a blank area (or the "+" button on the tab bar) > Exit Full Screen Mode

If you are not in full screen mode but the entire toolbar area is missing, one of Firefox's settings files might have become corrupted. It's a little tricky to access from outside of Firefox, but try this:

Exit Firefox using Alt+F4.

Call up the Start menu search box (or Run dialog) and paste the following, then press Enter to open the folder:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

If you only find one partially randomly named folder, click into that. If you find multiple folders, click into the most recently updated one.

Rename localstore.rdf to something like localstore.old

Start Firefox back up again. Your toolbar area should be back to the Firefox 30 default, and then quickly modified by Classic Theme Restorer and your other add-ons...

Any luck?

Regarding the issues you had with Firefox 29, some other users reported issues with the Customize page which seemed to be related to conflicts with some of their extensions. If you still have this problem after renaming localstore.rdf, let's explore that possibility a little further.

For future reference if needed, the keyboard shortcuts for Back and Forward are Alt+Left Arrow and Alt+Right Arrow.

Hi jscher! First, thanks for your help--I really need it! When I entered the info for "appdata" in Run, it gave me a file called:

                                           kdk44sh0.default

Is this what I should've gotten, & if so, should I open it? Also, FF was not in full-screen mode, as when I hit F11 the window went to full-screen, then I had to hit again to get it back to the smaller size I prefer. All I want is the old FF back, that has all the arrows, refresh button and the addons, etc. that I rely on many times every day & I want to be able to move them around to where ever I want them! I know it may sound stupid, but these recent 'updates' to FF accomplished the same thing to its browser that Windows 8 did to PCs--it took the fun out of it! Thanks again for your help

Since each profile folder has a partially random name, "kdk44sh0.default" is as good as any. Try double-clicking into that folder and look for localstore.rdf in there.

Hi! Yes, there's a 'localstore.rdf' , when I click it it asks what I want to use to open it---what prog/app do I use???? Thanks again!

Don't open it. Right-click > Rename, something like localstore.old should cause Firefox to ignore it, which is what we want to accomplish.

Hi! OK, will do. Then close & reopen FF? Thanks!

You should close Firefox before renaming any of its settings files. Please see my earlier post: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1005610#answer-589424

Hi jscher! I closed FF, renamed the file as instructed, but when I reopened I still do NOT have: address/search; refresh button; navigation arrows; & most of my addons/extensions are not functioning, (even though I checked in addons manager & they're all up-to-date)! I had to re-install my roboform toolbar addon to get it to show up, but some of my other addons refuse to stay installed--example, I use WorldIP & it works fine---until I close FF...when I reopen it, it's not visible anymore! Can you please tell me how to get all my missing buttons, address/search bar, extensions; addons etc back??? I'm not very technically inclined, so please use LOTS of details & hopefully, I won't have to bother you again. Do you know if this is just my problem, or is it happening to ALL Firefox users? I'm starting to think I'm alone in this since I only see you posting in this thread; if it IS just me, then what am I doing wrong???? Sorry to start your day off with problems, but I am very grateful for your very kind help! Gratefully, Nuts4Mutts  :)

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

Hi jscher and cor-el !!!

A million thanks to BOTH of you for helping me solve my Firefox problems!!! After following each of your excellently posted instructions, I now have my beloved Firefox 30.0 back! I'm SO VERY grateful for your kindness & patience as you guided me through a very frustrating couple of days; unfortunately, sometimes it's hard to find people who are willing to share their time for things these days, but BOTH of you were AWESOME!

jscher, I did the 'safe mode' procedure first, but I still didn't have things back to normal; however the experience was a valuable learning tool---if I have issues in the future I know I can use this method to troubleshoot, so "Thank you"!

I checked my email late last night & was so frustrated because I thought Firefox was in my past & I detest ALL other browsers with a passion; then I read cor-el's instructions & even though it was 2 AM I decided I'd give it one more try, so i followed the un-install-re-install procedure from Mozillazine, & low & behold it worked!!!! So far everything is back to normal & the only issue I still have, (that even has Adobe baffled), is a bizarre Flash-related error problem that effects 4 sites ONLY..weird, huh?!

Anyway, thank you BOTH for helping me restore Firefox---Friday the 13th turned out to be 'lucky' for me!

With abundant gratitude, Nuts4Mutts  :)  :)  :)
