Phone: ZTE Open C Firefox OS 1.3 Problem: When listening to videos on youtube I'm straining to hear the audio at full volume. I've tried different headphones. The volume is louder on mp3 files but not much. Is this a hardware or software problem? Can this be fixed?

Additional point: There is no volume slider anywhere to be found on the youtube pages when viewing on the phone, only a mute button, however, I know it isn't that as the volume is generally quiet on anything I play on the phone.

Have you used the volume up/down buttons to toggle the volume?

Does this happen with any specific website either?

more options

I would have thought so! Lol! But thanks for replying in any case.

I do believe it's a software problem as there's something I forgot to mention previously, the volume of the radio is fine, I don't need to turn the volume up all the way to hear it, it's slightly overloud if I do. I can live with the max volume for mp3's although a bit more would be helpful in a noisy environment for example. The problem is Youtube. When I play youtube videos at full volume I'm straining to hear them.

Sometimes the volume warning appears and turns down the volume to a whisper, fine if I was Superman with advanced hearing but I'm not. Haven't tried any other websites yet. Will do so when possible.

This is definitely a known issue and the engineering and developers are aware of the issue.

That's good to know! I hope there's a fix soon :)

Hi Syex, Thank you for your question. This is also happening in other apps. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1024661 I filed this bug and it may be a duplicate. But if you could add an adb logcat file to the bug it would be helpful. Thank you!

What's an adb logcat file, and how would I get it?

more options

You will require the Android SDK. You can view this: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox_OS/Debugging/Installing_ADB to assist you with installing and for simple commands.

Also ADB Helper in the Web App manager is a little more user friendly as well. To get started Using the App Manager and Install ADB Helper :-)

None of the above helps plus this support forum is badly organized. I'm disappointed with the lack of support for this phone. There still is no update to fix the volume. What I also don't understand is why was the phone released with this problem in the first place? Surely products are tested before being sold. I'm considering returning it and it wouldn't get a good review either. Not happy.

"This is definitely a known issue and the engineering and developers are aware of the issue." Really. And when are they going to fix it, the 12th of never? I know it isn't your fault but I'm sure you can understand my frustration.

Are you using the headset that came with the phone for volume control?

I was looking for volume questions on their FAQ page: http://www.ebay.com/itm/eBay-exclusiv.../291125433026

ZTE's support does answer these questionsas well if you are looking for more help on the issue?

The original headphones that came with the phone are useless. There's a button on the headphones that doesn't actually do anything. I'm using headphones which I know are fine. i believe it's a software problem. There doesn't seem to be any questions posted on the zte page yet. Thanks for replying.

HI Syex, I currently do not have an update to the bug we filed.

Will be sending phone back for refund soon as in my opinion it's been released faulty. I'm very disappointed that no-one who built the phone can be bothered fixing the volume. Also why is it that the people who made this page: http://firefoxosbuilds.org/install/ - assume that everyone that's purchased this phone knows how to "open a terminal inside the folder you've just unzipped" can they not be bothered to write an additional sentence on the same page explaining what and how to do that!? I'm also trying to download an update from the zte site and the download time is exponentially increasing. 20 minutes ago it estimated 50 minutes, now it's saying 1 hour and ten minutes. This is for a 235mb file from the same country I live in over high speed broadband... ok, so it's now back to 55 minutes... now it's saying 35.... 39.. 41, anyway, I digress. I will be pushing for a refund despite the length of time I've had it. Sad really, other than the volume fault and lack of eq (bass & treble), I like the phone.

Hi Syex,

I'm sorry about your negative experience with this volume issue in Firefox OS, as well as the update time for your your ZTE Open C.

I understand your frustration about the volume, and this is something that I also experience regularly when connecting my device to an external source. You have my complete empathy on this, and I will continue to push for investigation and a resolution of this issue.

I also understand that you are experiencing a long time for the download of updates on your device. ZTE is responsible for releasing updates, including hosting the update files. This slow download speed may be caused by a slowness on their servers. This is the first time that I hear of this issue, but I will forward this report to our Technical Account Managers if I see other reports around update speeds for ZTE.

Regarding the http://firefoxosbuilds.org/install/ page, it was created and maintained by the community of Mozilla contributors. Since this is an unofficial update process that can brick the devices, it's recommended that only advanced users attempt it. If you have Windows, you should also be able to just double-click the flash_windows.bat file inside the Unzipped folder.

Here is a Youtube video I just found with instructions of how to open a Terminal on Windows, as well as simple basic commands, in case double-clicking the flash_windows.bat does not work:

Again, I'm sorry about your negative experience with Firefox OS. We will continue to fight for an Open Web and to improve the system, and hopefully you will give us another try in the future.

Thanks,

- Ralph

Well that response has bought ZTE some time! OK, I won't push for a refund just yet. I will have a go at updating soon. A few months ago a software update came through on the phone wirelessly, I'm wondering if it could happen that way again, also, I still don't know where the feedback goes which is submitted via the phone. However, I'll wait for a while and see what happens. Thanks for reply. :)

Hi Syex,

As I mentioned before, I definitely understand and empathize with your frustrations, and will keep this thread updated with any new development on the volume bug.

The software update that is received wirelessly (also referred to as FOTA - Firmware Over The Air) is released solely by the manufacturer, in your case, ZTE. Since each device has a specialized version of Firefox OS, the manufacturers are responsible for maintaining and releasing updates.

It's technically, and legally, not possible for Mozilla to provide an update for the specific devices.

The good news is that your device can be rooted and updated manually, but this requires some level of expertise and there is always a small risk of bricking the device if the update is not applied properly.

As far as your question about the feedback, it can be seen on the following website:

This feedback is analyzed and tracked by our Advocacy Team and is used in shaping and improving all of Mozilla's products - including Firefox OS.

Thank you again for your support of the Open Web, and please let us know if you have any other questions or issues with your Firefox OS device.

- Ralph
