Chosen solution

When you type fewer than 3 characters in the Global Search box, the option is to search Google. Fewer than 4 characters, the options are Google and matching entries from the address book. Fewer than 5, and the options include "Messages mentioning: asdf" and Google. So, you must enter a string of at least 4 characters.

THanks very much for info.

I must say it's a strange way to do things as there are so many three-letter acronyms out there (DHL in my case).

Note that besides Global Search, the Quick Filter Bar is available for searching a folder according to Subject, Body, Sender etc., and a more detailed account or folder (including subfolders) search can be launched from Edit/Find/Search Messages or the context menu.

Choose the method that best suits the type of search.

Sorry, it took me a while to get there - scrub the "No Help" response.

The Edit menu doesn't have Find or Search option and the context menu doesn't work when you click on the grid area which I did at first (it says a folder needs to be selected but there is no way to select a folder). This also happens with the Message Filters option in the drop-down menu (top right).

Right-clicking on a folder gave me the kind of search I am used to using.

Finally I just figured out how QUick Filter works and it is pretty neat - that is, once you realise you can use both the filterring options on the left as well as the search options on the right (i.e. selecting "Body" beneath the Search box will cause the search to be done on the list of filterred messages - like I said, neat!)
