Since yesterday's upgrade, firefox won't fully close. It'll look like it has closed when I hit the red x but when I try to open a new instance I'll get an error saying that it's already running and can't be opened again until it's fully shut down.

I'll then see it running in windows task manager but when I tell it to "end process" it'll take five minutes or more to end the process and fully shut firefox down.

Is this a bug in the new version? The browser version is 29.0.1

hello bigtrees, yes unfortunately this is a known bug in the current version when you have set firefox to clear history on shutdown in certain situations. mozilla's developers are investigating the issue and working on a fix.

I made a small exe that ends the firefox.exe (no virus) without the need to open the Task Manager: http://goo.gl/sSyGzF

You can fix the shortcut on the Taskbar to make it faster, with this you just need one click to ends the process:
