why am I getting tons of pop up/spam download this and that?

I recently have been getting a lot of pop up windows asking me to download this and that etc. when I use firefox only. IE does not do this. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling firefox (with out deleting bookmarks, passwords etc) and still getting these. What can I do ?
