[Fx56] Add new Media section ... also Security Software for win8+ and other missing sections

  1. I noticed thst Firefox 56 includes a new Media section, underneath the Graphics section, which isn't there in fx55. Here's a screenshot: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/gallery/image/28639 I set up a Needs change entry, [Fx56] New Media section (see discussion)

  2. I can take care of the new media section in the troubleshooting information.  :)

I can take care of the new media section in the troubleshooting information. :)
  3. I see you included other sections on your pending revision. just added the new Media section for fx56+ for now.

We need to know the Firefox and Windows version that displays "Security Software" information before we can add this new section, since I don't see it on Windows 7 in 60, 61 Beta or 62 Nightly:

    {for win} = Security Software = This section displays information about the security software installed on your computer. This includes most antivirus and antispyware software, as well as your firewall. Not having security software installed on your system can leave your system vulnerable. For more information about troubleshooting issues that may be caused by malware, see the article [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]. {/for}

A screenshot would also help and, ideally, a bug report!

I also commented out the other new sections you added. I don't know if they're really needed and we don't have to document every about:support page section, especially ones that are blank for most people, like "Important Locked Preferences". We should start a new Discussion thread for those.

I can agree with commenting out some of those sections, such as Sandbox. However, I feel that Important Locked Preferences is an important section because it could troubleshoot why some settings are locked.

However, things like sandbox are pointless. I just included it because I thought we wanted a complete documentation of all the sections.

  5. What about the {for win} = Security Software = section you added which I commented out, since I don't see it on Windows 7? Can you include a screenshot for this discussion thread? What is your Windows version and the earliest Firefox version you see this section on ?

Here are the other missing sections you originally included, when you added the Media section, which I commented out:

= Important Locked Preferences = In Firefox, it's possible to lock certain preferences so that they cannot be changed by the end user. This is common in enterprise environments. For more information about locking preferences, see the article [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locking_preferences Locking preferences on MozillaZine]. {for fx54} = Sandbox = For security and performance purposes, Mozilla created Project Electrolysis (often referred to as e10s) to implement a practice called sandboxing into Firefox. This ensures that web content is run in a seperate process from the main Firefox program. This section of the troubleshooting information shows details about the sandbox security levels. See [https://wiki.mozilla.org/Security/Sandbox the Sandbox page on the Mozilla Wiki] for more information on sandboxing in Firefox. {/for} = Internationalization & Localization = This section shows information about the language and regional preferences in Firefox and your operating system. For information about using Firefox language packs, see the article [[Use the Firefox interface in other languages with language packs]].

After sleeping on it, I think it would be OK to add the three other missing sections, since we do cover all the others.

My problem with the Important Locked Preferences section is that not many users will need it but like you mentioned, it might be helpful in a few cases, Also, MozillaZine's KB isn't official documentation, isn't localized and its content may be outdated, so a Mozilla link would be better, if available. The Customizing Firefox Using AutoConfig Firefox for Enterprise kb article (which was based on https://mike.kaply.com/2012/03/16/customizing-firefox-autoconfig-files - see Bug 1453406) mentions locked preferences so we could link to that instead.

As for the Sandbox section, you link to a Mozilla Wiki page so some users might find the information helpful. Only thing, I see it in Firefox 52 ESR on Windows 7 so {for fx54} should be removed.

The section on = Internationalization & Localization = should be fine to add. I don't see it in Firefox 52 ESR but it does appear in my Firefox 58 version so we can make it {for fx58} unless you know when it first appeared.

I'll add a "Needs change" entry to add these other missing sections.

I'm on Windows 10 and I've only tested Firefox 60.0.1 with this. I can take a look and try to find out when that first appeared. It looks like this.

Agreed, that would be a far better link for the documentation.

It's possible for it to be in versions earlier than 54 since the e10s was soft-launched before version 54. I specified version 54 because that was the version in which e10s was added for everyone, regardless of prerequisites.

  7. So I tested and the Security Software section first shows up in Firefox 59. I haven't tested any other Windows other than Windows 10 though. If you don't see it in Windows 7, then I assume it's a Windows 10-exclusive.

I have a Windows 8 device that I can check tomorrow to confirm that. Once we get that all figured out, I will make the changes to the other sections that you mentioned and then make another edit to the document.

  8. I see from the image you posted, that the Security Software section for you in Firefox 59/60 on Windows 10 shows the following information:

    Security Software

    TypeName
    Antivirus Avast Antivirus
    Antispyware Avast Antivirus
    Firewall Windows Firewall

For the record, I do have Security Software installed on Windows 7, Microsoft Security Essentials, and Windows Firewall is enabled.

Feel free to update the article when you get a chance.

  9. Security Software is visible on both Windows 10 and Windows 8 starting with Firefox 59. I adjusted the Sandbox {for} to Firefox 52, changed the support article in the Locked Preferences. The Localization section first appeared on Firefox 58.

    Changes made.
