"Searching with the default search engine" (Doubts on a paragraph)

  1. Sorry, I cannot realize what is the purpose of these instructions: could you please reword it in a way to explain what with these steps we are trying to achieve?

I fear that the average user (to which SUMO is addressed) can be confused (as I am).

    Thanks.

Type your search terms in the address bar and press {for win, linux}{key Enter}{/for}{for mac}{key Return}{/for}. If your input is automatically completed to a web address, press {for win, linux}{key Del}, {key Backspace}{/for}{for mac}{key delete}{/for} or {key Space} to remove it before pressing {for win, linux}{key Enter}{/for}{for mac}{key Return}{/for}. If your input looks like a web address, the selected entry under the address bar says "Visit" and Firefox would try to visit that address. To prevent this, do the following before pressing {for win, linux}{key Enter}{/for}{for mac}{key Return}{/for}:
    1. If your input contains a /, type a space after your input.
    2. Press {key ↓} or {key Tab} to select the "Search with" entry.
{for fx65}Alternatively, begin your input with a ? to make sure that it is searched for (examples: ?e.g., ?mozilla.org). Do this also if your input is the same as a bookmark keyword, smart keyword or search shortcut, or begins with a ?, or begins with a smart keyword or search shortcut followed by a space.{/for} You can change the default search engine.

I think that "If your input is automatically completed to a web address..." means that the URL autocomplete feature finished the entry in the address bar. (This is covered in the URL autocomplete section of the Address bar autocomplete in Firefox - Search your bookmarks, history and tabs article.)

For example, typing in goo in the address bar autocompletes to google.com as shown here:

    Fx77AddressBarSearch-URLautocomplete

    Fx77AddressBarSearch-URLautocomplete

That sentence explains how to remove the auto-completed portion if you really want to search for "goo".

I don't understand the need for the next sentence, "If your input looks like a web address, the selected entry under the address bar says "Visit" ... since all you have to do is continue typing in your search term and select an entry that applies to your search term, or press enter to perform the search.

I won't try to explain the "Alternatively.... " content. You could ask Angela by PM or email if she could review and simplify the content in the Searching with the default search engine section that was added in that revision, since she approved it.

  3. I moved this to a section under "Autocomplete" since it is about autocomplete. I also shortened it for clarity.

Hope this helps improve this section, I agree it was confusing and overly worded. Feel free to make edits to my changes.
