I had this problem, and found that the below, cut the start up time (from scratch) from about 25 seconds to less than 10 seconds.

Both of these can be done from in Tools/Add-ons

    1. Check and see if you have the Skype Extension enabled - if so disable it (This gave me the greatest improvement btw)

    2. Check how many Java consoles are enabled - disable all except the latest version.

Hope this helps someone as this problem was driving me crazy!!

I had the same problem on the beta version 8,9,and now 10, tried all the usual trouble shooting ideas. What work for me cutting start up time from 30 seconds down to 10 seconds:go in options/advance/network/settings .I changed my settings to NO PROXY instead of system proxy and after i rebooted a couple of times it has settled down.It was a pain starting but now is OK overall Firefox leaves Explorer 9 standing.Hopes this helps someone.

Sorry for the late answer but this forum wasn't monitored until recently.

Buzza, there is already a link to Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems.

KECD, are you sure that "No proxy" is faster than "Use system proxy settings" (default setting)? Can you check it now?
