The Mozilla Crash Reporter is a program that sends information to Firefox developers when Firefox crashes. Firefox developers use this information to make future versions of Firefox crash less frequently.

The Mozilla Crash Reporter comes up because Firefox crashes; it does not cause Firefox to crash. For suggestions on how to prevent Firefox from crashing, see Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly).

When Firefox crashes

After Firefox crashes, the Mozilla Crash Reporter window will appear.

Tell Mozilla about this crash so they can fix it: If this box is checked, the Mozilla Crash Reporter will send a summary of the crash to Mozilla. Deselect this box if you don't want to send the report to Mozilla.

Details...: Will open the "Report Contents" window, where you can view the technical details of the crash.

Add a comment (comments are publicly visible): Use this box to add any further information that might be useful to developers trying to find the cause of the crash. The comments you post may be read by anyone..

Include the address of the page I was on: When checked, the information you send to Mozilla will include the website you visited before the crash.

Allow Mozilla to contact me about this report: Check this box if you would be willing to receive emails from the development staff should they need followup information from you about this crash.

Note: Mozilla will NOT e-mail you back unless more information is requested about your crash.

Enter your email address here: If you chose to help our development staff get information and reproduce this crash, provide the email address you wish to be contacted at here.

Quit Firefox: Close the dialog and don't start Firefox again.

Restart Firefox: Start Firefox again. Firefox will give you the option to open the windows and tabs you had open before the crash. If you crash again after choosing to restore your windows and tabs, one of the pages you were on is causing the crash. In this case, choose Start New Session.

Viewing reports outside of Firefox

If you can't use the above method because Firefox crashes when it starts, you can also view the reports in files on your computer.

Windows 7 and Vista

  1. Open the Windows Start menu.
  2. In the search box, type %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\ and press Enter.

Windows XP

  1. Open the Windows Start menu, then choose Run....
  2. In the Run dialog, type %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\ and press Enter.

Crash reports are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Crash Reports/

Crash reports are stored in ~/.mozilla/firefox/Crash Reports/

The Crash Reports folder will contain two subfolders: pending and submitted. submitted contains reports that have been submitted, while pending contains reports that have not. Each file in these folders represents one report.
