I previously brought up the option to update and un-archive this article in another thread, /en-US/kb/Firefox%20crashes/discuss/1652#post-3301 as an alternative to Michael Verdi's suggestion for a new "How can I view my crash report?" article.

See also my post about un-archiving and updating this article to provide instructions for viewing a crash report in a related discussion: /en-US/kb/Firefox%20crashes/discuss/1855#post-3787

This article would also be useful for providing a link to define the term "Mozilla Crash Reporter", which currently appears in the Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes article.

The first section is not helpful and may be misleading as some people might think it's the information to put in a support request.

The second section is already in the Firefox crashes revision in pending review except the crash report part which is also useless. What will a user do with a crash report?

The pending revision to Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes does not include information from Firefox crashes when you open it for actually viewing your crash report (for when you can't open in Firefox Safe Mode to access about:crashes).

The pending revision to Firefox crashes does not include information from Firefox crashes when you open it for actually viewing your crash report (for when you can't open in Firefox Safe Mode to access about:crashes).

Find an existing bug listed in the crash report? File a bug report? Provide a link in the support forum?

As an aside, I note crash-stats seems to search sumo for part of the crash signature not for the crash ID. If that is the case then stating crash report titles rather than merely crash IDs may be important in order that posters may discover questions/answers about a crash.

It was when SUMO has some articles about crash signatures that have been archived.

I'd still like to un-archive this article, which needs some updates but is basically OK as-is, for now. Both Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes and Firefox won't start - find solutions refer to the Mozilla Crash Reporter and it would be nice to link that text to a maintained article that provides more information and screenshots.

Also, Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues was just updated for Firefox 8 because the Troubleshooting Information page now has a Crash Reports entry (under Application Basics) that links to about:crashes. This article provides more information about crash reports than the Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes article, which is currently the "more info" link.

When you see the crash reporter, you can do 1 of 3 things:

1. Restart Firefox - default action. The crash reporter will do it's thing and then Firefox will restart.
2. Quit Firefox. The crash reporter will do it thing and then you will try to start Firefox.
3. Quit the crash reporter. Then you will try to start Firefox.

Once you've done one of those, you no longer require any information about the crash reporter. If there are things about the crash reporter that cause confusion with people we should address that with a change to the crash reporter itself. If you have ideas, let me know - this is one of my responsibilities.

So we shouldn't unarchive Mozilla Crash Reporter. But if there are helpful things in that article like how to get a crash report when you can't start Firefox, then we should add them to the appropriate article(s).

Hi, Michael,

The article is basically "more information" for people who want it, especially since Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes and Firefox won't start - find solutions both refer to the Mozilla Crash Reporter to define a crash. Having a linked article with a screenshot might be helpful to confirm whether or not Firefox crashed (as opposed to another type of error) besides providing other information.

Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes only talks about getting a crash Report ID to post on the forum. Viewing your own crash report is a self-help tool for users who might actually benefit from reading the information it contains, such as related bug reports.

I just updated http://kb.mozillazine.org/Mozilla_Crash_Reporter with a new Windows 7 screenshot (I installed the crashme extension to get it) and I was thinking to use it in this article. Oh well

Hey Alice - I think we can find a way to add that bit of helpful info to the Firefox Crashes and Firefox will not start article.

Viewing your own crash report is not a self-help tool for hardly anyone but Firefox developers. I think we should have some how-to-contribute documentation on reading crash reports (short term) and I think there are ways to make looking at crash-stats.mozilla.com actually useful for sumo helpers (much longer term).

In that case, what about UN-archiving this article, then changing the category to "How to contribute"? We can then update and maintain it for use by Firefox Support contributors, for getting people help with their crash reports. Related discussion: /en-US/forums/contributors/704981?page=5#post-43111

Since there was no response to my last suggestion about making this article into a "How to contribute" article I'll withdraw it.

I updated this article to replace two Windows XP screenshots with Windows 7 screenshots and approved it as a minor revision.

I'd like to link to it from Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes and Firefox won't start - find solutions, even though it remains archived. I asked about the policy for linking to and updating archived articles here: /forums/contributors/704981?page=5#post-43246

Advanced panel - Accessibility, browsing, network, updates, and other advanced settings in Firefox links to this article, under "System Defaults":

• Submit crash reports: If Firefox crashes, the Mozilla Crash Reporter will appear, asking you if you want to report the crash to Mozilla. With this box check marked, the Tell Mozilla about this crash so they can fix it check box in the crash reporter will default to being check marked.
I started a new thread in that article's Discussion forum about removing or replacing that link, here: See also these related discussions:
