How to change your default browser to Firefox on Windows

If you change your default browser to Firefox on Microsoft Windows 10 or 11, any links you click will automatically open in Firefox.

Note: If you don’t currently have Firefox installed on your computer, first download and install Firefox.

Make Firefox your default browser in Firefox Settings

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Preferences.Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings.
  2. In the General panel, find the Startup section.
  3. If Firefox isn't currently set as your default browser, you'll see the message "Firefox is not your default browser". Click the Make Default button to set Firefox as your default.
Note: If Firefox is already your default browser, you'll see the message "Firefox is currently your default browser" and the Make Default button will be missing.

If Firefox was not able to change your default browser, it'll open the Windows Settings app, with the Default apps panel already open. You'll have to manually update your Windows settings to make Firefox your default browser using the settings below.

Manually change your default browser to Firefox in Windows Settings (Windows 10)

  1. Click the Windows Start button.
  2. Type “Default apps” and select Default apps.
  3. Under Web browser, click the browser currently listed.
  4. Under Choose an app, click Firefox to set it as the default browser.

Manually change your default browser to Firefox in Windows Settings (Windows 11)

  1. Click the Windows Start button.
  2. Type “Default apps” and select Default apps.
  3. Select Firefox from the list.
  4. Under Set default file types or link types, find the Make Firefox your default browser prompt at the top of the window and click Set default.
